Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf RR 1889 Green Cast Lantern

(Item: JV95680)

Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad 1889 M.M. Buck Green Cast Ext. Base Globe Lantern

Here is a very rare and hard to find lantern that is missing from most collections. An 1889 MM Buck & Co. lantern made for the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad. The lantern comes with an extremely rare extended base green cast "CO&GRR" globe in a square edge panel that is excellent to near mint condition. The globe has only a few very minute rim flea bites that are too small to photograph, but need to be mentioned for accuracy. It is 5 5/16" tall. A very nice globe! The frame is embossed on the top lid "C.O. & G. R.R., The Buck, M.M. Buck & Co., St. Louis" with the last patent date being Sept. 24, 1889. The twist off fount and burner is stamped on the bottom "MM Buck Mfg. Co." with the last patent date of Sept. 21, 1897. The frame is 10 1/2" tall, and has been cleaned sometime ago. It is in very good condition with some very minor overall light surface roughness from years of use. A very nice frame with no pin holes or rust. The top lid does have two minor splits near the left of the "C" and near the right side of the "R" from when the manufacture pressed the railroad companies markings in the tin. Very minor and small (see picture). The fount will still oil, but the original wick has hardened up in the wick adjuster, and will not raise up or down. This could be cleaned out to work properly. The tapered barrel, double ring brass "CO&GRR switch key in picture #6 is being sold SEPARATE, and is not part of the lantern. This lantern will be the pride and joy of any railroadiana collectors collection, so don't wait too long. You will search long and hard to find another one!

Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad History

In 1894, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad took over the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company and immediately launched a large scale expansion program. Known informally as the "Choctaw Route," it was located in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The company completed its main line between Memphis, Tennessee, and western Oklahoma by 1900. In 1901 the CO&G chartered a subsidiary company, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Texas Railroad, to continue construction west into the Texas panhandle, and by 1902 the railroad had extended as far west as Amarillo. By agreement of April 1, 1904, the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf, and practically all of its property, came under the control and became the property of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad "The Rock Island System". It was formally merged into the Rock Island on January 1, 1948.
