Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad 1890's Brass Tapered Barrel, Double Ring Switch Key
This is a very early key, marked for the CO&GRR, which is the predecessor to the Rock Island System. This brass double ring tapered barrel switch key has very little wear, and is marked in serif letters on the front, "CO&GRR." Nice patina! On the reverse side, it is marked, "53." The key is 2 1/8" long, and the hilt is 7/8" wide. If you're interested in very old and limited railroad items, this is the key for you!
Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf Railroad History
In 1894, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad took over the Choctaw Coal and Railway Company and immediately launched a large scale expansion program. Known informally as the "Choctaw Route," it was located in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. The company completed its main line between Memphis, Tennessee, and western Oklahoma by 1900. In 1901 the CO&G chartered a subsidiary company, the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Texas Railroad, to continue construction west into the Texas panhandle, and by 1902 the railroad had extended as far west as Amarillo. By agreement of April 1, 1904, the Choctaw, Oklahoma & Gulf, and practically all of its property, came under the control and became the property of the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific Railroad "The Rock Island System". It was formally merged into the Rock Island on January 1, 1948.
