1899 Canyon City & Cripple Creek Railroad Company Corporate Seal
We are offering at this time a piece there can only be one of. The corporate seal from the Canyon City & Cripple Creek Railroad Company. This unique railroadiana piece comes with provenance, and will be a special addition to even an extensive railroadiana collection. The Canyon City & Cripple Creek Railroad Company was incorporated on June 27, 1899 by men who were Moffat associates, and most of them were named directors of the company. The route specified by the incorporation papers was from a station named Oro Junta on the mainline of the Florence & Cripple Railroad north of Florence, Colorado, southwesterly to Canyon City. A lengthy section of “Florence & Cripple Railroad, Colorado Rail Annual, No. #13” (pages 97 to 105) is devoted to this railroad. It proves to be very interesting reading. The written provenance of this corporate seal comes from the previous owner, who had owned this item for 59 years. The corporate seal itself is in wonderful original condition. The manufacturers mark appears on the front of the seal. It is in gold, and worn enough from age that it is hard to read. The seal is cast metal, with black enameled paint, gold trim with a red and gold embossed star on either side. The paint shows overall wear from age and use, as should be expected, but it is in very good condition. It is heavy and solid. The impression plate reads “The Canyon City & Cripple Creek Railroad Company, Seal, 1899”. The corporate seal is 11” tall, 2 3/16” wide and 6 ˝” long. The impression plates are 2” in diameter. The corporate seal was acquired by the previous owner at the Colorado Midland Railroad terminal in Colorado Springs in 1950 after the railroad finally ceased operation and before the office building at the terminal eventually burned down. This exceptionally hard to find Colorado railroad corporate seal should be a welcome addition to a serious railroadiana collection!
