1870-80's Victorian Walnut Asethetic Period High Back Bed & Matching Dresser
Aesthetic period solid walnut very ornate high back bed with elegant matching dresser. The high back bed is beautifully hand carved, with recessed panels of lilies, roses, and foliage. Clusters of oak leaves and acorns decorate all four corner panels that surround the large round burled walnut medallion. Raised fans flare to the corners of the headboard in a dramatic fashion. The matching footboard and side rails are in the same pristine condition as the headboard. This is a double bed.The side rails are original to the bed, and also in excellent condition. Original finish. The bed is in overall excellent condition. There is one age split on the right side of the lower recessed center panel of the headboard. It is hard to see, and is not a structural split. It must be mentioned for accuracy. It is more difficult to find a matching set these days, due to seperation by family or auction. This set has been in one family for many years. Dimensions of the bed are: 14 ½” deep, 28” tall, 27” wide
The tall matching dresser is also from the Aesthetic period, and is solid walnut with a brown striated marble top. The tall dresser is beautifully hand carved, to match the high back bed. It has recessed panels of lilies, roses, and foliage. Clusters of oak leaves and acorns decorate all four corner panels that surround the large round beveled mirror. Raised fans flare to the corners of the dresser mirror frame the same dramatic fashion as the bed. The round beveled mirror is original to the dresser, and is in excellent condition, only a few small age spots. There are five hand dovetailed drawers, three upper, and two large lower. Each drawer has a central burled walnut panel. The all original solid brass hardware is Eastlake influenced. The hardware is all present and in excellent condition. The original key for the dresser locks is present and works. The finish appears to be all original. The brown marble top has white striations with black specks. It has no chips or cracks. It has recently been professionally polished. The dresser and bed both have brass casters. The original metal mirror supports have been replaced within the last thirty years with a frame that is attached by screws to the back of the dresser. The frame appears to be oak, but the finish is dark enough that it doesn't detract from the dresser and its beauty. The mirror would look more dramatic actually, if it was attached to a wall instead of using the frame. Dimensions of the dresser are: 14 ½” deep, 28” tall, 27” wide. This very attractive victorian period bedroom set will be the center of attention in any setting!
