Victorian Cranberry Reverse Swirl, Peanut Shaped Pickle Castor
This is a very dainty and unusual shaped pickle castor. The frame is wide and low, with round flower designed handles on each side. The base rests on four small feet which also have a flower design. The pickle fork is sterling, with a floral and swirl design. The base is marked, but the manufacturers name is partially obscured. We have researched the manufacturers of American silver plate, and believe it is Mathews & Prior, New York, N.Y.. Founding date unknown. Listed in JC 1904 in sterling silver section as out of business. It is an excellent and fine old frame. The reverse swirl "peanut" shaped insert is perfect, with no chips, cracks or flea bites. It is obviously a blown insert (see picture of the pontil). It fits the frame perfectly, and the lid fits securely. The dimensions of the frame are 6 3/4" tall, and 7 9/16" long. The insert dimensions are 4 1/8" tall, and 4 1/8" in diameter. An excellent choice for your collection!
