1920's Satsuma Vase
We assume this fabulous vase is from the 1920's, but could possibly be older. It is 19 1/2" tall, 7" diameter at the lip, and 10" diameter at the widest part. Has black makers mark on the bottom of vase (see picture). This vase is heavily decorated with gold and hand enamelling all over. The enamelling is in perfect shape. The inside of the lip shows some crazing from age, and a 1 1/4" surface crack in the glaze at the lip that does not detract from its beauty (see picture). The vase is rust tones & gold, with tiny touches of turquoise in the beading (enamelling). The subject of the Satsuma vase is monks, holy men and small boys. Possibly teachers and students of holy order? The holy men are holding scrolls or fans. The faces are exceptionally detailed and delicate, as is the whole vase. Only a few inches of this fabulous piece are not covered by the intricate designs. This vase deserves its own display to showcase its beauty!
