1860's Alexander Roux Walnut China Cabinet with Griffin Base
This is an exceptional example of fine quality Rococo style furniture, attributed to Alexander Roux. Alexander Roux was born in 1813 in France and immigrated to New York City, where he married three times and had 6 children. In 1855 he employed 125 people. His furniture factory backed up to George Hunzinger's establishment. The Hunzinger factory on seventh avenue was destroyed by fire on Oct. 17, 1877. The fire also damaged Alexander Roux's establishment. Alexander Roux worked in Gothic, Rococo, Renaissance, and Louis XV. The height of his success occurred around 1870. He retired in 1881, but his son continued with the business until 1898. This information is available in "American Furniture of the 19th Century 1840-1889," by Eileen and Richard Dubrow. This lovely china cabinet is trapezoid shaped, larger at the back, smaller at the front. It is solid walnut with gold gilt trim. It has flattened bun feet in front, plain in rear. The lower base features two large crouching winged griffins with women's heads and busts and three toe claw feet. The foreheads of each griffin have a Greek style hair decoration. The front corner columns are reeded with gold gilt trim. There are three replaced beveled glass panels, no chips or cracks. The lock is present and works; there is a key. The top of the cabinet has an attached crown or crest with a medallion in the center and scrolled carving all around the top of the cabinet, which is also trimmed in gold gilt. The finish is original and the gilt has not been touched up. There is a slight amount of gilt flaking in a couple of spots from age , some wear to the finish, and a few old worm holes. There are two shelves. Dimensions of the china cabinet are 17 ½" deep, 33 ½" wide at the widest point, and 69 ½" tall. It is in exceptional condition for its age. It is either sold alone for $6,350.00, but it came to us as part of a set of three matching pieces, which may be purchased together for $10,700.00, this is a 15% discount. The regular price of all three pieces would be $12,600.00. They came from a fine estate in Loveland, Colorado, and are ready to proudly grace your home!
