AT&SFRy (Santa Fe) Mimbreno Demitasse Cup & Saucer Set

(Item: 4522C)

AT&SF (Santa Fe) Railway Mimbreno Demitasse Cup & Saucer Set

This very nice demitasse (after dinner) cup & saucer is in the "Mimbreno" pattern, the white version. The cup and saucer are in near mint condition. The saucer only has three under glaze kiln touch marks on the back side. There are no chips, cracks, or flea bites on either piece. The cup is back stamped "Syracuse China, 99-J (date code 1970), Made Expressly for Santa Fe Dining Car Service." The saucer is back stamped "Syracuse China, 100-A (date code 1971), Made Expressly for Santa Fe Dining Car Service." The cup is 2 3/8" tall, and the saucer is 4 1/2" in diameter. Mimbreno railroad china was used on the Santa Fe Super Chief from 1937 to 1970. The back stamp on the saucer "100A" indicates that it was produced in January of 1971. According to Richard Luckin's book "Mimbreno to Mimbreno", revised in 2000 edition on page 73, Mimbreno china was made available to the public in two sales, one January 1, 1971, and May 15, 1971. The demitasse saucer was available on the sale list according to page 74. The last check for Mimbreno china was written to E.A. Hinrichs & Co., Lincolnwood, Ill. on April 9th, 1971 by treasurer of the Santa Fe Railway, C. Rhake. Mimbreno china was designed by Mary Elizabeth Jane Colter, a Harvey System employee. She was given the commission to design china based on the concept of the Membres Indians. Her resultant designs are widely collected to this day. A wonderful addition to make to your dining car china collection!
